Papershots è un progetto nato nel 2014 quando due fratelli, un fotografo (T. Baj) e uno scrittore (F. Baj), hanno avuto l’idea di unire i rispettivi mezzi espressivi in maniera innovativa. Si è scelto il blog per arrivare ad un più vasto pubblico possibile a livello internazionale, ma anche per sperimentare attraverso dei post, così da poter cambiare forma, idee e contenuti senza essere legati ad una dimensione scritta “permanente.” Il blog è poi diventato un sito più strutturato a partire dalla fine dell’anno successivo.
Le foto sono sempre in bianco e nero e i pezzi di flash fiction contano fra le 140 e le 160 parole. I contenuti vengono raggruppati in diverse categorie, di cui le più esplorate sono #I am the Passenger, che è oggetto di questa mostra, e #In the Shade of Grapevines, pezzi diversi sulla vita o il mondo più in generale. Esplorare la connessione tra ogni foto e il testo che l’accompagna – o forse tra ogni testo e la foto che lo accompagna – spetta davvero allo spettatore/lettore. Non è l’immagine ad ispirare necessariamente il pezzo, o viceversa, perché “rappresentano” lo stesso “soggetto.” Ed era questa forse la sfida più affascinante nel mettere insieme questi due mezzi espressivi, che attraverso la natura non permanente del pubblicare online ci ha permesso di capire solo dopo qualche anno che ogni connessione particolare, pur guidata dalla scelta di una foto e di un testo, è in verità di dominio del lettore/spettatore, il quale decide cosa vedere prima, se leggere o guardare, e in quale modo.

And I ride, and I ride... ricordate la canzone? La nostra categoria più popolare raggruppa storie nate da quella fonte di inspirazione infinita che possono essere bus, treni, tram e tutte le altre forme di mezzi pubblici in una grande città, e quello che vi avviene sopra e intorno. Forse più di ogni altra categoria, questa riflette la natura sperimentale di foto + flash fiction tentando di catturare, come da sito, “incontri fugaci, pezzi di conversazioni, frammenti di vita che durano un viaggio e poi svaniscono.” Potrebbe anche essere la continuazione ideale di quegli schizzi, di moda qualche tempo fa, della vita in città che cambiano, di gente, posti e situazioni che passano troppo velocemente per poterli afferrare, o quando, come nelle nostre vite frenetiche, prestiamo poca attenzione a quello che ci succede intorno. Senza dire che spesso molti di noi non vedono l’ora di scendere dai mezzi per arrivare dovunque dobbiamo arrivare!
I pezzi qui in mostra sono stati organizzati in una linea immaginaria di metro/bus/tram che inizia da un lato della città e si biforca all’altro, da una parte in campagna e dall’altra al mare. Come nella loro natura originaria di post su un blog, siete invitati a interagire coi pezzi in mostra mettendo il vostro “mi piace” o anche “lasciando un commento.”
Dunque, non oltrepassate la line gialla e buon viaggio!

Baj) and a writer (F. Baj) to combine their two respective media in a somewhat experimental way. It started out as a blog as the most effective way to reach out to as many people as possible on an international level and also to experiment through blog posts, by editing and changing format, ideas and structure without being bound to a more “permanent” written form. The blog became a fully-fledged and more structured website by the end of the following year.
Photos are always black and white and the pieces of fiction always flash, between 140 and 160 words. The themes explored are grouped in different categories, of which the two most popular are #I am the Passenger, on focus in this exhibit, and #In the Shade of Grapevines, miscellaneous pieces about life and the world more in general. The connection between each photo and the accompanying piece – or is it each piece and the accompanying photo? – is for the viewer/reader to explore. The photo doesn’t necessarily inspire the piece, or vice versa, because they “represent” the same “subject.” This was arguably the most fascinating challenge in putting these two media together. And thanks to the temporary nature of publishing online through posts, we ourselves could only appreciate after a few years of trying that each particular connection, while guided by the choice of one photo and one piece, is really up to the viewer/reader who will decide what to see first, whether reading or looking, and in which particular way.
#I am the Passenger
And I ride, and I ride... Remember the song? This is our most popular category, grouping tales from the never-ending source of inspiration that can be buses, trains, trams and all other forms of transport in a big city, and what happens on and around them. Probably more than any other category, this reflects the experimental nature of flash fiction + photo as it tries to capture, quoting from the website, “fleeting encounters, snatches of conversations, snippets of life that last a ride and then are gone.” It could also be seen as an ideal continuation of those sketches, popular a while ago, of life in changing cities, of people, places and situations that slip by too fast for us to grasp, or when, as in our frantic lives, we pay little attention to what goes on around us. Not to mention the fact that most of us can’t wait to get off public transit to get wherever it is we have to go! The pieces on show here have been organized interactively in an imaginary subway/bus/tram line, starting at one end of the city and forking at its other end into the country and to sea. True to its original design as blog posts, you’re more than welcome to interact with the pieces on show by “liking” them or by “leaving a comment.”
So, mind the gap and have a safe ride!
